Tempso is a team of three friends. We are committed to delivering a smooth streaming experience dedicated to classical music, for free. Tempso is powered by Spotify API and does not require an additional paid subscription for Spotify Premium users (integration with alternate streaming services is under development).

Classical Music should be for everyone!

We started building Tempso in our free time with the intent to make classical music available to everyone, user-friendly and accessible to first-time listeners and experts alike.

Starting from scratch and building our way to Tempso’s recent official release, we interviewed many professional musicians, classical amateurs and people who did not know much about classical music. We realized that while classical music is a niche genre, a LOT of people were willing to spend time discovering and exploring it. However, they all shared the same anxiety: “I don’t know where to start”.

While iterating over multiple prototypes of Tempso, exploring and leaving ideas behind, we focused on making the listener’s journey as smooth as possible. By doing so, we realized that we were able to fulfill both the amateur’s need for exploration and depth, and the newcomer’s need for clarity and guidance.

Tempso is solving the classical music streaming problem

Have you ever tried to search for a specific classical piece on any of the big music streaming platforms? Well if you have, chances are you have noticed the inconsistencies with search results and how tedious (not to say impossible) it can be to find your favorite classical music recording.

By searching something as simple as “Mozart 25 symphony”, you will be returned a disorganized array of isolated movements from different recordings of Mozart’s numerous compositions. There is no easy way to listen to the four movements of Mozart’s 25th symphony, when they should be listed all at once and properly ordered, as you would expect.

Now let’s consider Beethoven’s famous “Moonlight Sonata”: it is composed in three movements (or three distinct tracks on streaming platforms), and has been recorded hundreds of times by different musicians. This generates several hundred disorganised tracks that will be randomly thrown at you when you search for this specific composition on a standard streaming service.

Generally speaking, classical music has been left behind in the recent shift to the digital streaming era. Classical metadata are by nature more complex than those of any other type of music, and as a result are often scarce and of poor quality (you can think of metadata as all of the relevant information there is to know about a track, such as composer, musicians, featured instruments, etc.). Furthermore, a lack of structure in the classical catalogue hinders the ability to link all these precious data and limits the user experience. Last but not least, the UI/UX principles governing the current music industry do not translate well to the classical world, where the quantity of information needed is substantially larger than what the current design practices allow for.

This has long been a standing issue that major players in the music streaming industry have so far decided to ignore* (see references below). Classical music lovers deserve a well curated streaming app!
